By decision of the Council of the European Union, temporary protection for persons from Ukraine residing in Germany as beneficiaries of international protection has been extended by a further year, until the end of 4 March 2028 (EU) 2026/1912.

Important:
For persons entering the EU for the first time since 5 August 2026, the granting of temporary protection is subject to new rules. Temporary protection is no longer be granted to persons who fail to comply with their military obligations in Ukraine – for men subject to compulsory military service, this means they must prove that they are either not subject to any military obligations or have been exempted from them, and are accordingly permitted to leave the country legally under Ukrainian law. This does not apply to persons already living in the EU, including where new military obligations have arisen in the meantime, for example upon reaching conscription age or through call-up for military service.

Military obligations in Ukraine also do not constitute grounds for asylum. Accordingly, without prejudice to the assessment of each individual case, persons who will not be granted temporary protection in Germany in future will also not be granted protection under asylum law on account of military obligations.
