Vaccinations

The COVID-19 vaccine provides a high level of protection against severe illness or death. Even after an infection with the latest coronavirus variants, the level of immunity built up is not sufficient. You can get infected again. It is recommended that everyone in Germany from the age of 18 is vaccinated against COVID-19 at least twice (to obtain a basic immunity). People who are at particular risk of severe illness or of being infected with the coronavirus should also get a second vaccination. These include:

  • People from the age of 60,
  • People from the age of 6 months who are at a particular risk of severe illness from COVID-19 due to an underlying illness.
  • People living in care institutions,
  • Staff at medical facilities and care institutions (out-patient and in-patient) who are in direct contact with patients.
  • Family members and those in contact with people who cannot protect themselves adequately with a COVID-19 vaccine (e.g. due to an illness).

This second vaccination should be given 12 months after the last COVID-19 vaccination or infection with the coronavirus, preferably in autumn. Check your records to see if your second vaccination is due.
