Ukrainian nationals and their family members who were residing in Ukraine on 24 February 2022 can enter Germany visa-free and then stay for 90 days in the Federal territory until 4 December 2025.
Ukrainian nationals who had their domicile or habitual residence in Ukraine on 24 February 2022 but were temporarily not residing in Ukraine at this point in time and who entered Germany by 31 December 2024 without holding the required residence permit for long-term residence are exempt from the requirement of having a residence permit for a period of 90 days from the date of initial entry in Germany.
This also applies to refugees recognised under the Geneva Convention on refugees and persons who enjoy international or equivalent protection in Ukraine (amendment of the Ukraine Transitional Residence Regulation (Ukraine-Aufenthalts-Übergangsverordnung)).
During this time, you can consider whether you would like to apply for a long-term residence permit. You would then have to submit such an application within this 90-day period.
The application for a residence permit for temporary protection under Section 24 (1) of the Residence Act must then be submitted within the first 90 days of your stay. You can find the locally responsible immigration authority in the BAMF-NAvI.
