How does the German school system work?

Germany has more than 32,000 schools, all of which guarantee the same minimum standard. All 16 of Germany’s federal states have been preparing to welcome your children at their schools with a minimum of bureaucracy.

As a rule, all children in Germany are required to enrol in school the year that they turn six,  and they must attend school for nine years. The following exceptions apply:

  • Berlin, Brandenburg and Bremen: 10 years of school
  • North Rhine-Westphalia: 9 years of school at an academic secondary school (Gymnasium), 10 years at other general-education secondary schools
